  1. Planning

    December, 2005

The story of The Mains of Drum began during a game of golf when Deryck Forbes was offered the chance to buy the site where Deeside Nurseries traded just outside Drumoak. Initially he rejected the idea but on seeing the site he realised the potential of what could be achieved. Deeside Nurseries had once been a thriving business but over the years it had become very run down through a combination of the then owner, ill health and increasingly eccentric business practices. Deryck and his wife Audrey took ownership in December 2005 and set about clearing the site and securing planning permission. Work was stopped until planning was finally agreed.

Our first award... We were delighted to receive Business Success (Under 3 Years). "Winner of business success under three years is The Mains of Drum - an independent family-run business which has created a purpose-built garden centre and shopping destination at Drumoak. The Forbes family, which had little or no retail experience before launching the venture, took six long years to negotiate a rigorous and demanding planning process. But their determination paid off and the first 24 months of trading has far exceeded initial expectations. Judges were impressed with the strong family values of the company and their commitment to staff, their understanding of products and client base, and their future plans for diversification."
